Establishing a New Standard of African American Leadership in Research, Public Policy, Business, and Education
Press Conference: African American Leadership Institute at Paul Quinn College
The history of African Americans in Texas and throughout America is one of resilience, innovation, and triumph. However, despite some limited success, the African American community has been impaired by decades of neglect, insensitivity, and the inability of leadership to develop and implement plans to sustain its core institutions and people. As a result of this history and combined with significant demographic and socio-economic changes, North Central Texas and the state of Texas are both in the midst of a series of historic transitions. These transitions have had and will continue to have a disproportionate economic, educational and political impact on the African American community in Texas. In an effort to (1) better understand and prepare for said changes and (2) establish a comprehensive strategic plan for the future of the African American community in Texas, elected officials and community leaders from North Central Texas have created the African American Leadership Institute (“Institute”). The Institute, housed at Paul Quinn College (“College”), is designed to become a premier model for the study and advancement of public policy, economic development, education, and leadership development as it relates to the African American community in Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, and Tarrant County and the state of Texas.
